Breitkreuz lone bright spot in loss to Chiefs

Yes, Jared Breitkreuz allowed seven goals in a 7-0 loss to the Kelowna Chiefs Tuesday night at the Summerland Arena.

Yet, the Steam netminder was the bright spot for the home team as he made 24 saves in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League match. The Steam trailed 2-0 after one on goals by Marshall Porteous, who netted the winner, and Zach Erhardt. The score remained that way after two periods and despite being outshot 10-6 again. Steam forward Cairo Rogers didn’t hesitate to give his netminder the props he deserved.

It was in the final half of the third period that things went sideways for the Steam. Already without Dawson Jenner, who received a game misconduct in the second after being given two 10-minute misconducts, The Steam then lost Mitch Gove, who was handed a game misconduct, as well as Rogers and Morey Babakaiff, who received 10-minute misconducts.

At the nine-minute mark, the Chiefs scored twice in 24 seconds on the man advantage. Brody Dale and Liam Drager netting goals. Roughly a minute after Drager scored, Ryan Stack netted his first of two on the night to make it 6-0. Juanre Naude added the final goal at 3:17.

The Chiefs power play went 4-for-10, while the Steam blanked on six tries.

The Steam hit the road for a pair of games in Sicamous on Feb. 8 and Revelstoke on Feb. 9. Catch the action at www.playfullscreen.com.
